Effectively incorporating technology into theclassroom is a great challenge faced by schoolstoday. In this article, we propose a MobileComputer Supported Collaborative Learning(MCSCL) system to support high school teacherswith wirelessly networked Handheld Computers. This system promotes student collaboration andconstructivism, without losing face-to-facecontact.The MCSCL system was tested during a fiveweek experience in a high school physics class. We observed both its qualitative and quantitativeimpact. Students and teachers responded veryfavorably to the system, and the experience alsohad a strong social impact outside theclassroom. The MCSCL system provided ahighly motivating learning environment thatchanged classroom dynamics and promotedcollaboration between students. We obtainedstatistically significant results showing that theenvironment created by combining the teacher’sinstruction with the MSCSL system enabled thestudents to construct new knowledge based uponthe previous knowledge provided by the teacher.
